GEORGE NEWS - Well-known historian from Wilderness, Hugo Leggatt, will be speaking at the monthly meeting of the Genealogy Society of South Africa in the George Museum at 10:00 on Wednesday 17 Sep-tember.
Leggatt is among other things also the author and publisher of the well-researched and influential book, Wilderness, Gateway to the Garden Route.
The topic of the presentation will focus on Henry Fancourt White and Edward Montagu White.
Henry White bought the original land/farm on which the present Blanco has developed, while later on, Montagu White bought the original farm on which Wilderness has grown.
The White family has left a legacy behind and is responsible for the building of the historical Montagu Pass (which is due to be repaired soon), the purchase of the land on which the world-renowned Fancourt Golf Estate has been developed (the original Fancourt Manor, built by White, is still in use today), the building of the Zuurberg Pass near Addo, and more.
Whites Road in Wilderness has appropriately also been named in honour of the White family.
Coffee and tea will be served after the presentation.
