GEORGE NEWS - Last week, Shamel Spandiel, a 2025 Mrs South Africa semi-finalist and qualified paramedic, led some heartfelt discussions on teenage pregnancy at four schools in the Garden Route District Municipality.
These schools included Heidedal Primary, Thembalethu High, Pacaltsdorp High and Heatherlands High.
Drawing from her own experience as a mother at 15, Shamel offered a candid look at the challenges and realities of teenage parenthood. Her initiative tackled the issue’s many facets - social, economic and emotional - encouraging open dialogue among the learners.
As part of her Mrs SA community work, Shamel collaborated with the Garden Route District Municipality to distribute 50 Twinkle Sprinkle toiletry bags at each school, supporting girls’ dignity and menstrual health.
These talks empowered the learners with knowledge and resources, addressing critical issues like poverty and lack of support that often drive teenage pregnancies.
Shamel’s campaign aims to foster hope and resilience, inspiring young people to make informed choices for a brighter future.
