GEORGE NEWS - A captain of the Thembalethu police station appeared in the Thembalethu Magistrate's Court on Tuesday 22 March after his arrest last Friday.
Mzole Crosby Mtabati (53) was arrested by the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation team for tampering with evidence connected to a business robbery at the Puma garage in Thembalethu on 31 January.
The arrest follows a search and seizure operation of Mtabati's office led by the Hawks, where they discovered empty cartridges that had been removed from the crime scene.
The Hawks arrested Mtabati after it was determined that he had removed the evidence from the scene.
Mtabati was released on bail of R1 000 and will make his next court appearance on 25 April.
After an armed robbery at the garage to the entrance of Thembalethu, a shoot-out ensued between law enforcers and the suspects.
At that stage it was believed that the robbers hijacked a bakkie earlier that evening elsewhere in Thembalethu and later used it as a getaway vehicle. It was later found abandoned in Zone 1.
