GREAT BRAK RIVER NEWS - While some people’s plans for the last day of the year include a massive cooler box, lots of ice and an umbrella; others’ itinerary include a cycle, head gear and the great outdoors.
The GrootbrakGrabadoo at the Great Brak River celebrates their 21st anniversary this year, and is gearing up to receive a healthy number of families, bikes and dogs – all set out to make the most of the Garden Route’s beautiful offerings.
GrootbrakGrabadoo offers a 4.8km run or walk route and mountain bike options over four different distances: 15km, 35km, 57km and 75,5km.
The event is supported by Property Connect and ICONIC Mossel Bay, with added backing by De Dekke Spar, Coca-Cola, Coimbra Cycle House, Halfway Toyota, Local Choice Pharmacy, 8 Mile Construction, and Laundry on Long.
Manie and Wilsie Oosthuizen of Property Connect, the driving force behind this upcoming event, for the third consecutive year, say GrootbrakGrabadoo epitomises the essence of family fun.
“It’s a special privilege to cheer on competitors along the route, while it also serves as a great team building exercise. Their gratitude when taking a refreshment break is the best!”
Cyclists on the longer routes will pass landmarks such as Jonkersberg Road and By Grace Alone, while passing working farms, the village of Friemersheim, and game farms before hitting the tarred road again. Photo: Supplied
Race director Alewijn Dippenaar says the routes this year take a slightly different direction from previous events, after setting off from the Great Brak Sport Grounds in Lang Street at 06:00 on Tuesday December 31.
The 35km ambles along as per normal past Pep Stores, through pretty farmlands, past the chicken farm and back past Sandhoogte before hitting the tarmac once again.
Cyclists on the longer routes will pass landmarks such as Jonkersberg Road and By Grace Alone, while passing working farms, the village of Friemersheim, and game farms before hitting the tarred road again.
“Those braving the 75,5km route will carry on all the way towards the three bridges where a turn-off to the left will take them past a horse farm and into the Friemersheim forest. Then the infamous dipper will ensure that legs are tested to the max. Be sure to wave when you see local forest dwellers in their doorways!”

Alewijn says the 75km route is sure to challenge riders, while the 57km track will also make you work those muscles. “There will be marshals en route and signs to ensure that the shorter distance racers know where to go, with warning signs at sharp turns and descents.”
Most importantly, he reminds cyclists: “No helmet, no ride.”
Beneficiaries of GrootbrakGrabadoo 2024 include House of Valour, GB Cricket Club, and Working on Fire.
