GEORGE NEWS - The three-legged German shepherd cross Gypsy’s journey towards a forever home has received a welcome boost, as Dotsure stepped in to contribute to his food and veterinary costs for a year.
Dotsure came across George Herald’s recent article about Gypsy, whom Sentiara rescued after he was found with a large, painful growth on his leg during an outreach in the Lancewood informal settlement.
Moved by his story, Dotsure decided to lend a helping paw while Gypsy adjusts to life on three legs.
Gypsy is currently being fostered by George Herald news editor Kristy Ayliffe and her husband, Jeff, and could be meeting a potential adopter this weekend.
“We are all holding thumbs that the meet and greet goes well,” says Kristy. “He is such a brave dog and has come so far in the time we’ve been fostering him.”
When Gypsy first arrived, he was terrified of the stairs. Within days, he was running - yes, running - up and down them like a champ.
“His favourite things to do are playing in the garden, being brushed and cuddled, and eating - this boy has a huge appetite. He sleeps on his couch right through the night and is super well behaved. Give him half a chance and he climbs on your lap,” says Kristy.
“His resilience and the way he is adapting to his missing leg is amazing.”
Gypsy was diagnosed with cancer after being rescued and had to have his leg amputated to save his life. Following several weeks of recovery at the PDSA, he faced another heartbreaking setback when his former owner decided she no longer wanted him because he was now a dog with only three legs.
Sentiara’s Salomé Bruyns said Gypsy had remained incredibly friendly despite everything he had endured, and she is now hoping that his next chapter will be his final one.
With Dotsure’s support and a potential adoption on the horizon, Gypsy may finally be getting the soft landing he deserves.
