GEORGE NEWS - Disc golf players from George did extremely well in the inaugural Cape Town Disc Golf Open on 11 and 12 January in Stellenbosch.
Eleven George players took part, reaching a milestone by competing in both the Mixed Professional Open (MPO) and Female Professional Open (FPO) divisions, the first time that local players have competed in the advanced disc golf category.
Ingo Hilbert finished in eighth place in a highly contested MPO division and podium finishes went to Alex Meulenbeld (1st), Charl Morkel (2nd) and Ettienne Niuewenhoud (3rd). Lize-Nari Schoeman came second in FPO to Josephine Meulenbeld (there were two entries in FPO).
The Men's Amateur One (MA1) division was dominated by entries from George players and they achieved three podium finishes - Leon Strauss (1st), Bryan Wilson (2nd) and Wayne Fairman (3rd).
Additionally the entire Mixed Amateur u.18 (MA18) comprised George players. Heathe Hilbert (1st), Raine Hilbert (2nd), Cayden Strauss (3rd), Anthony Yssel and Grace Wilson (the youngest player in the tournament) gave exceptional performances on one of the most challenging courses in South Africa.
They completed two rounds of 18 holes on a shorter layout. The tournament was sponsored by Disc Golf South Africa, Limitless Disc Golf and Discmania, a USA disc manufacturer.

The players in George have in the past three years developed to be competitive in all divisions and are consistently competing at all the national events.
"We are very proud to be encouraging family participation and have the most active junior division in South Africa," says Leon Strauss who heads up the Eden disc golf club.
"Our future international players could come from George. It is a non-profit organisation representing disc golf in George. Our primary focus is to promote the development of disc golf in George, with a special interest in underdeveloped regions and communities."
