According to Jandré Bakker, head of communications at the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works, the works comprise upgrading for fire compliance and general repairs to the existing single-storey main building as well as renovations, alterations, and minor additions of different elements to the building.
External works include replacement of parts of roofs, ceilings, floors, etc. and will also address fire water services, sewer reticulation systems and storm water disposal systems.
Walkways and paving will also be created or upgraded.

"The project is undertaken on behalf of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport," said Bakker. "The contract was awarded on 25 January and site handover took place on 8 February. The practical completion date is 10 January 2023 and with any snags and full project close-out, the final completion date is 10 April 2023."
The condition of the exterior paintwork of the museum is receiving attention as part of the much-needed renovations.
