GEORGE NEWS - George is in the global spotlight this week as it hosts the 4th G20 Employment Working Group (EWG) Technical Meeting at the prestigious Fancourt Hotel and Country Estate.
This key meeting, which kicked off on Monday 28 July, marks a significant step towards shaping international labour and employment policy under South Africa’s G20 Presidency.
The gathering precedes the Labour and Employment Ministers’ Meeting (LEMM), scheduled for 30 to 31 July, and sees the arrival of over 150 delegates, including ministers, senior officials and representatives from G20 member states, invited countries and international organisations.
The G20 member countries are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States, plus the European Union and the African Union.
Georgians have seen heightened security and increased activity around George Airport and Fancourt as blue light convoys transport dignitaries throughout the city.
Themed ‘Living and Working in an Unequal World: Ensuring Decent Work and Decent Lives’, the EWG meeting will tackle urgent global challenges such as youth unemployment, gender inequality in the workplace, social protection gaps and the rise of platform work, all within the context of declining labour income and widening inequality.
The discussions will culminate in a draft declaration to be finalised by ministers during the LEMM, setting the tone for future labour policy cooperation across the world’s largest economies.
