GEORGE NEWS - The inaugural Cape Colony Slave Emancipation Walk took place in George on Sunday 30 November, bringing together a group of 20 participants of all ages for a guided walk through several important historical sites.
Starting at St Paul’s Chapel, the group visited the Slave Protectors’ House, the Old Gaol and the remains of the early settlement known as Preto along the Malgas River.
According to organiser Hein Scheepers, the walk aimed to highlight parts of George’s early history that are not widely known and to encourage greater awareness of the town’s heritage landscape.
"The event ended with a shared meal at the heritage community space situated on the site of George’s first watermill," he said.
Organisers expressed their thanks to the local media, the George tourism department and the traffic department for their support.
The walk was also attended by the chairman of the George Heritage Society, Willie-John van Niekerk.
Despite being arranged in just three weeks, the walk was considered a success, and organisers hope to see more community members involved next year.
They say initiatives like this help broaden public understanding of the many layers of history that have shaped George and the surrounding area.
