GEORGE NEWS - A much-loved visitor has made a surprise return to Victoria Bay.
Columbo, the Southern elephant seal known for his relaxed charm and impressive size, was spotted this morning, Thursday 5 June, lounging at Victoria Bay.
Since November 2023, Columbo has become something of a local celebrity, turning up at coastal spots from Pinnacle Point and Dana Bay, where he spent three weeks moulting, to Knysna, Victoria Bay, the Kaaimans River, and even as far as Jongensfontein.
In January, he received his rabies vaccination and booster during one of these stopovers.
The Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (Smart) has been keeping a close eye on Columbo, monitoring his well-being during his visits.
“We’ve spent the day checking on him to make sure he is safe and comfortable,” Smart said in a statement.
As always, the public is reminded to admire Columbo from a respectful distance. “He’s a wild animal and needs space to rest,” they urged.
