GEORGE NEWS - Saturday 28 May was a day for dog owners in the Garden Route to strut their stuff at the fun dog show hosted by the dog training school Smart Paws Academy.
110 dogs attended with dogs ranging from large Great Danes and boerboels to tiny Chihuahuas and Yorkies. There were 12 categories which saw 298 entries across the spectrum.
At 57 entries, "The dog the judges would most like to take home" saw the biggest competition, making the judges' task almost impossible. Well-known resident Gert Niehaus provided some extra fun by entering his baby goat into the category "Most interesting cross-breed".
The event was a huge success with a total of R17 000 raised to be used by the SPCA and the PDSA to sterilise dogs.
Some of the winners included William Rhodes with his three-month-old cross-breed Oli, that was the dog the judges would most like to take home.
The champion of the day was won by Erica van Vuuren's schnauzer, Gretl, and the runner-up was Australian shepherd Storm, owned by Megan Aubrey.
Hosted at the George Riding Club, the event offered several home industries stalls and jumping castles. The SPCA was also there, offering micro-chipping for only R100 a dog, and 15 dogs were chipped.
The organisers thank all the sponsors, stall owners and the public for making the day a memorable one and hope to make this an annual event on dog lovers' calendar.
