GEORGE NEWS - The George and Garden Route District Fire Departments will, in association with landowners and other role players, be conducting controlled burns for the purpose of fuel reduction on suitable days from 18 to 31 March.
The area affected is north of Blanco and west of the R404.
"This will depend closely on monitored weather conditions," said Athane Scholtz, municipal media liaison officer. "The department apologises in advance for possible smoke and other implications, but emphasises the importance of fuel reduction for the purposes of long and medium-term fire safety of communities bordering the urban edge."
In addition to municipal fire departments, other role players in this initiative include the South Cape Fire Protection Association, Working on Fire, CapeNature and the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries.
Fire emergencies can be reported on 044 801 6311(all hours); and general emergencies or after-hours incidents on 044 801 6300.
Controlled burns are scheduled for next week in the area north of Blanco and west of the R404.
