GEORGE NEWS - Commuters on Go George buses may experience delays in travelling time as a result of the construction work on the Thembalethu bridge over the N2.
According to George Municipality's communications chief Chantèl Edwards, the work on the bridge currently causes congestion in morning peak traffic in Nelson Mandela Boulevard.
Responding to a complaint from a commuter from Parkdene who was late for work last Thursday, 16 March, because of a delay, Edwards said Go George issued an alert to passengers on social media on the 16th to expect delays on routes travelling from the Parkdene area.
"To accommodate passengers, Go George constantly monitors peak traffic to assess the need to send in extra buses to transport passengers to work. Unfortunately, once these buses get caught up in the congestion, delays are still inevitable."
She said Go George encourages passengers to take an earlier bus than they usually take during normal traffic conditions. "The travel time will still be longer than usual, but by planning their trips in this way, passengers can still get to work in time."
The complainant said on the 16th it seemed as if the entrance to the road was being blocked by minibus taxis, but Edwards said the traffic department confirmed that this was not so.
"Regrettably motorists and taxis ignoring traffic light signals contribute to the already congested traffic due to the construction work."
