GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - Building collapse survivor Shadrack Maine is making very good progress and has started walking on his prosthetic leg with no assistance from a physiotherapist, although he is still using a crutch to help him keep his balance.
Maine was retrieved from the rubble the day after the five-storey Neo Victoria building in Victoria Street collapsed. His left arm and leg had to be amputated so that he could be freed from underneath a concrete slab where he was pinned down.
Maine has been undergoing rehabilitation at Spescare in Denneoord, learning to use his prostheses that were sponsored by the George Rotary Club.
Maine has also received support from George artist Marnitz Steyn who donated a painting to be auctioned in aid of his living expenses.
The painting, titled 'Waves', was auctioned through Traders Auction Group and raised R11 000.
Steyn met Maine while visiting Spescare together with his Bible study group. He was touched by Maine's perseverance in the face of his challenges and felt moved to donate one of his favourite paintings.
In a video interview with Group Editors' head of digital, Ilse Schoonraad, Maine said he is happy to be alive and grateful that he can start a new life, thanks to the prostheses. He is the breadwinner of his family. His wife and child live in Maseru.
