GEORGE NEWS - A passer-by stumbled upon a naked baby boy in a pit toilet in Nelson Mandela Village in Zone 9, Thembalethu, yesterday afternoon, Tuesday 17 September.
Thembalethu police and paramedics responded to the scene.
The baby was immediately taken to hospital where he was admitted for emergency medical treatment.
The officials who responded to the scene found shredded pieces of what appeared to be a birth certificate, which led them to the mother of the boy. When they arrived at her residence, they found that she had already been apprehended by community members. She was then handed over to the police.
Further investigation and medical records revealed that the mother gave birth to the boy on 15 September at George Hospital. They were discharged yesterday.
The 21-year-old mother faces charges of attempted murder and child neglect. She is scheduled to appear in the George Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
The matter is being investigated by the Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit of George.
