GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality's Department of Community Development highlighted Child Protection Week from 29 May to 3 June by holding information and awareness sessions on the topic at different crèches in the municipal area.
Rosemarie Mehlo, a social auxiliary worker at the department, spoke to 816 learners in different crèches about safety, specifically focusing on their own personal safety.
Special emphasis was also placed on making the children aware of dangers lurking around them, whether it be inside their houses or outside.
The children were informed of safety measures to follow should they find themselves in dangerous situations as well as who to tell or call in harmful situations.
Mehlo explained to them on their level the importance of seeking help when they feel they are in danger and advised the teachers to use rhymes and songs to teach the emergency numbers to the children.
During these sessions, the pre-school learners received an information pamphlet with important emergency numbers as well as a small surprise that included sweets.
The awareness sessions took place at the following early childhood development centres within the George municipal area: Siyazama, Masizakhe, Zamuxolo, Sandanezwe, Nonzame, Nikiwe, Illingelethu, Mzomhle, Rosedale Educare, Lawaaikamp, Sonneblomland, Golden Valley, Rosedale Nursery, Klouter Kabouter, Kwakhanya, Isiseko Chris Nissen and Mina Moo, Kleinkrantz Crèche and Sonneblom Crèche in Touwsranten.
Cut out, print or write down these numbers and put it up in your house where you or your child can see it in case of an emergency.
