WESTERN CAPE NEWS - Debbie Schäfer, Western Cape MEC for Education, encourages people in the Western Cape who do not have matric to apply to complete their schooling.
Many learners were not able to write their matric examinations or complete their high school careers, for different reasons.
"Many of these learners are now adults and wish to complete their school leaving certificate to further their education.
"In 2017, almost 20 000 candidates registered to write the 2016 Senior Certificate in May/June," says Schäfer.
Her office is inundated with queries from adult learners wishing to complete their Senior Certificate qualification.
"It is encouraging that so many adults now wish to obtain their school leaving certificate," said Schäfer.
Registration for the 2017 Senior Certificate, which will be written in May/June 2018, opened on 1 October and candidates have until 31 January 2018 to complete their registration.
"I wish to encourage all adult learners who have not completed their matric and qualified for the Senior Certificate Examinations, to apply to write the 2018 exams.
"It is never too early to get started, as the Senior Certificate examination is based on the NSC Caps curriculum, which is the same course content covered by the Grade 12 learners in school," says the MEC.
The following learners qualify to register for the Senior Certificate exams for adults:
- Adult learners who are 21 years and older, who have one of the following:
- A General Education and Training Certificate (GETC) for Adult Basic Education and Training (Abet); or
- A Grade 9 (Standard 7) school report, stating that they have passed Grade 9; or
- A recognised equivalent qualification obtained at NQF Level 1, which requires two official languages.
Adult learners who are 21 years and older who have passed some subjects for a Senior Certificate or a National Senior Certificate, who:
- Need to complete a Senior Certificate qualification;
- Have an incomplete National Senior Certificate, and whose School-Based Assessment (SBA) has expired;
- Candidates who did the NSC in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
In exceptional cases, youth who are 18 to 20 years old and who are not in school can apply to the provincial head of education to write the exams if they have one of the following:
- A General Education and Training Certificate (GETC) for Adult Basic Education and Training (Abet); or
- A Grade 9 (Standard 7) school report, stating that they have passed Grade 9; or
- A recognised equivalent qualification obtained at NQF Level 1, which requires two official languages.
