GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - While most people were enjoying some time off during the Easter weekend, the George Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) had no such luxury. A total of six suspects were arrested in connection with various unrelated incidents of rape during the weekend that started on Friday 2 April.
In the first incident two suspects were arrested after a woman (32) was allegedly raped in Zone 8, Thembalethu, shortly before midnight on Friday 2 April.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson, Sgt Chris Spies, it is believed the victim was walking down the street when two men approached her.
"The pair dragged her into a shack where she was assaulted by one and raped by the other. Both suspects, aged 21 and 32, were arrested shortly after the incident and are facing charges of rape and assault," he said.
The team also arrested three more suspects aged between 17 and 30 in connection with unrelated incidents of rape in George and Knysna.
A 31-year old suspect was also arrested in Kwanokuthula in Plettenberg Bay on Sunday 4 April after he allegedly raped his housemate's girlfriend (30) while she was visiting her boyfriend at his residence in Hani Street on Saturday 3 April.
According to Spies the victim fell asleep and was woken up by the suspect at about 01:00 on Sunday morning, after which she discovered he had violated her.
All the suspects remain in custody and were scheduled to appear in various courts on Tuesday 6 April.
