GARDEN ROUTE NEWS AND VIDEO - Marais Kruger of the DA was elected this morning, around 11:30, as the new district mayor. This follows after the resignation of Andrew Stroebel, whose last day in office was 31 October.
Marais received 19 votes which ensured a straight win against the ANC's candidate, Stephen de Vries, who secured 7 votes.
Voting took place through secret ballot. The new whip of council is DA Cllr Koos Malooi.
Addressing Council for the first time as mayor, Marais said he is ready for the task at hand, and had a nice jog last weekend to clear his head and prepare for this brand-new chapter.
He stressed the importance of working together as council to serve the community.
