GEORGE NEWS - Gogo Nothemba Mavusa (78), who has been a supporter of Mamelodi Sundowns soccer team since the club started, was honoured by fellow supporters on her birthday on Saturday 11 November in Thembalethu.
Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club originated from Marabastad, a cosmopolitan area north-west of Pretoria. The club was originally formed in the early 1960s by a group of youngsters, among whom were Reginald Hartze, Joey Lawrence and Bernard Hartze. It became an official football club in 1970 and Gogo Mavusa has been a supporter ever since.
Thembelani Fatuse, chairman of the Sundowns supporters branch in Thembalethu, led the delegation to surprise Gogo Mavusa with a birthday cake and food hamper at her home. Speaking at the occasion Fatuse said they have decided to honour Gogo Mavusa for her undying support and the contribution she has made to the development of the Sundowns supporters' club in Thembalethu.
"We are very grateful that she has been with us all these years. She inspires us, even at the times when our team doesn't play as well as we would like. Thank you, Gogo." Gogo Mavusa could not stop smiling. She said she was very happy about this act of kindness, especially since it was completely unexpected.
