GEORGE NEWS - The Garden Route SPCA discovered the brutally beaten bodies of two dogs hanging from a tree in Thembalethu on Thursday.
According to Frieda Jansen van Rensburg, manager at the Garden Route SPCA George, JP Visser, the foreman of a construction company working in Silver Town, Thembalethu's Zone 7, called on Thursday at 16:00 to report a savage beating of a dog by an unidentified man on the opposite side of the construction site. "A few of his workers had run to him to report that a person across the gorge was apparently taking a dog to a tree to hang and beat it."
Inspectors Andrè Baartman and Gerda Reynders immediately rushed to the scene to investigate, where, upon their arrival, they were shocked to discover two dogs hanging from a tree. "The two male dogs were already dead when the inspectors found them," said a shocked Van Rensburg.
One of the dogs had an open head wound and was strung up with, what Van Rensburg describes as, nylon rope. An eyewitness claimed that the culprit is an elderly black man wearing blue denim jeans and a white T-shirt.
The Garden Route SPCA is offering a reward to the person who is positively identified as the culprit and arrested. They further appeal to any business that may offer their service in printing flyers, which could be distributed in an effort to track down the perpetrator. For further information contact the Garden Route SPCA George branch on 044 878 1990.
It is speculated that the 'losing' dogs in dog fights are sometimes beaten and hanged by their owners as punishment.
Serial killers linked to animal abuse
According to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) violent acts toward animals have long been recognised as indicators of a dangerous psychopathy that does not confine itself to animal abuse.
"Anyone who has accustomed themself to regard the life of any living creature as worthless is in danger of arriving also at the idea of worthless human lives," wrote humanitarian Dr Albert Schweitzer. According to Robert K Ressler, who developed profiles of serial killers for the FBI (USA Federal Burea of Investigation), murderers very often start out by killing and torturing animals as kids.
