GEORGE NEWS - Residents and businesses in Wellington Street, George, are relieved that the road can once again accommodate two-way traffic, just in time for the festive season.
The upgrade has been continuing for the last six months and had a huge effect on the lives of residents of Denneoord and businesses next to the road.
The good news is that the contractor, Entsha Henra, completed a bitumen-treated base (BTB) course layer for both directions on Tuesday 15 December. This means two-way traffic is possible at long last.
Road users must not be concerned about the current lack of driving comfort, since a final 30mm asphalt layer will be placed on top of the BTB in January, ensuring a smoother drive.
The rebuilding of the sidewalks is scheduled for completion by April 2021. All kerbs have been installed at the final level height and there is currently a 30mm height difference between the kerbs and the road surface. Motorists are cautioned that the road remains an active construction site, with the same demarcated construction material on site. All excavations in Wellington Street will be covered, except the corner of the Courtenay/Wellington street intersection, which will be demarcated. Construction will restart on 11 January.
Report any incidents pertaining to Wellington Street to the project manager, Herrmann Schlag, on 082 570 8330.
