GEORGE NEWS - The Thembalethu Police conducted a raid on illegal shebeens on Wednesday 18 December as part of their festive season operations to combat crime in the area.
According to Thembalethu police detective commander, Lieut-Col Eric Julies, the raids were conducted at illegal shebeens in the hotspot areas. Large amounts of liquor and illegally brewed beer worth R7 500 were confiscated.
Julies said these raids will continue throughout the festive season.
Illegal shebeens have in recent years been at the centre of the fight against crime in Thembalethu as they are among the biggest contributors to crime. Victims are harassed, raped, assaulted and, in some cases, murdered by criminals either at illegal shebeens, or on their way home from shebeens. Colonel Douw Herbst, Thembalethu police station commander, previously said that the police have declared war against illegal shebeens.

Cases of beer were confisticated.
