GEORGE NEWS - A mother from George wants to send out a warning to others after her son was mugged and held at knifepoint in broad daylight on Friday morning 2 December. The incident happened at 09:00.
"My son was sitting outside his high school's gate after his exam when three men approached him with what he described as fishing knives. They demanded him to hand over his phone or else they would stab him.
"Thank goodness nothing happened to him and I just praise God for that, but this is just horrific to think that our children in their school uniforms are not even safe outside their schools. I think the George community should be more aware of what is going on. This is not the most wonderful time of the year. We need to be more vigilant and aware and cautious," the mother said.
The teenager was robbed of his cellphone and a case has been opened with the George police.
According to the mother the muggers were extremely casual about their doings.
"They just came right up to my son and sat on either side of him and put the knives to his sides and demanded his phone. Then they very casually got up and walked away, not bringing any attention to themselves," she said.
She warns other citizens to be more aware of their surroundings and be more vigilant.
"Do not bring attention to yourself by using your phone out in the open. Especially our children need to be told more and more to be aware of their surroundings, to watch their backs," she said.
