GEORGE NEWS - A human skeleton, trapped between rocks below Oubaai in Herolds Bay, was found on Sunday afternoon (January 15).
Officers from the George forensic pathology unit were on the scene shortly after 13:00 and clambered 300m over the rocks to recover the bones.
A T-shirt that was found with the bones, indicates that the skeleton is possibly that of the missing police student, Tebelolo Deejee Mokgope (28) from Gauteng.
Mokgope, who was stationed at the police academy in Oudtshoorn, drowned on 1 October 2016 after a freak wave swept him and his three friends off the rocks below Oubaai.
His friends managed to swim out, but he disappeared under the water. Mokgope's body was never found.
Police earlier said Mokgope was part of a group of recruits who rented a house at the Oubaai Golf Resort in Herolds Bay for the weekend. Captain Malcolm Pojie, the Southern Cape police spokesperson said the skeletal remains will be subjected to forensic DNA testing.
"DNA samples will be taken from the remains and family members of the missing police student, to confirm the identity."
