GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - On Monday morning, 3 October, the Garden Route SPCA (GRSPCA) was notified of a bull that had fallen into an empty grave in Thembalethu.
On arrival at the scene, inspector Estelanie van Wyk, senior inspector Salomé Bruyns and kennel carer Robbie Kamfer found the bull stuck in a six-foot deep grave. The poor animal had apparently fallen in the night before and couldn't get out.
Desperate times call for desperate - and sometimes creative - measures, and as they didn't have the right equipment at hand to lift the bovine from the grave, the rescuers had to come up with another plan.
"As we stood around making plans to get him out, he tried a couple of times to jump out. We were very surprised to see how high he could actually jump," said Bruyns.
"We asked around for some shovels and immediately started throwing back some of the sand and stones to make a small step from which he could climb out.
"For our own safety, we couldn't grab him by the horns. If he gets out and turns on us we might end up in the grave ourselves. I clearly remember a similar case where a cow chased us around after we got her out," she said.
However, the step worked and the bull climbed out unharmed.
