GEORGE NEWS - The seven men accused of assaulting and robbing Maximilian Reimann (20) from Harmony Park in Pacaltsdorp at the end of August, were denied bail in the George Magistrate's Court on Thursday 15 September.
However, according to defence attorney Winston Jansen of Jansen and Samson Attorneys, they will be appealing the decision.
The application was a schedule 6 bail application citing exceptional circumstances, but the court found that these circumstances were invalid.
The accused, Johnwill Tarentaal (20), Shannen-Lee Botha (18), Jody Botha (21), Sheldon Remas (19), Ethan Bevie (21), Chadwill Kiewiet (19) and a 17-year-old boy, all face a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
They remain in custody in Mossel Bay and will again appear in court on Friday 7 October.
An online petition against bail has been circulating on social media.
The attack
Reimann was attacked by a group of men in Mission Street, Pacaltsdorp, in the early hours of Saturday morning, 27 August. A passer-by, Charlotte Edwards, found him lying next to the road later that morning.
According to Edwards, Reimann was nearly hypothermic when she found him. He had severe injuries to his face and his clothes were torn off his body.
He was rushed to hospital and later underwent facial reconstructive surgery in the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town.
He has since been discharged and is recovering at home in the care of his mother.
