GEORGE NEWS - George Police have opened a murder docket after a 20-year-old female student from the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) George Campus was stabbed to death, allegedly by her boyfriend.

The victim, who has yet to be identified, was stabbed multiple times and died in an ambulance on campus.

According to police spokesperson Sgt. Christ Spies, the incident happened yesterday, 6 June, at about 12:50.

“Preliminary reports available at this stage indicate that police were dispatched to the campus following reports of a violent incident. On arrival the members found the victim inside an ambulance with multiple stab wounds to the body. She was declared dead by paramedics on scene. It is believed that the victim was attacked inside her bedroom on the campus,” said Spies.

The suspect (22) was arrested on the scene and had to be escorted by police after violence erupted. 

Bullet proof shields were used as police escorted the suspect from her flat to the police vehicle as fellow students allegedly became violent. Police also had to use stun grenades to disperse the rowdy students.

The suspect will appear in court once charged.

Spies added that crime scene experts combed the scene for clues. The motive for the killing is yet to be established.

In a statement NMU said they were shocked and saddened by the tragedy.  

NMU George campus spokesperson Milisa Piko said counselling and other psychosocial support mechanisms, including pastoral services, have been arranged for students and staff affected by the tragedy.

“The university, in particular the George Campus, extends its deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased student. The university, specifically the George Campus, has been unimaginably shaken by this incident, and will do whatever it can to cooperate with the relevant law enforcement agency in the quest for justice,” she said.
