Update
GEORGE NEWS - There are still students at the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) George Campus who could not be appointed accommodation because their bursary payments have not being issued by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
One student said students were being "kicked out" from their accommodation because the funds had not been released.
"It seems as if the NMU management has never communicated with NSFAS [as had been indicated in a recent media statement from the university]," said the student who asked for anonymity.
NMU George communications officer Milisa Piko said the contents of the university's statement referred to in relation to NSFAS "remain true".
She said there are different circumstances for various cohorts of students who apply to NSFAS and it depends on the category of NSFAS funding that applies to a particular student.
"As part of newly introduced NSFAS changes, courses that have less than 60 credits are not considered for funding. Given the implications of this, the university met with NSFAS, where it was agreed that the university may appeal this decision. The university is thus speeding up the process of lodging this appeal.
"Furthermore, no students were being 'kicked out', but simply asked to move from off-campus residences to campus while the NSFAS challenges are being seen to with NSFAS directly."
NSFAS is not responding to George Herald's queries.
