GEORGE NEWS - An eight-year-old boy was murdered last night, Thursday 19 August, in Thembalethu, following an alleged domestic altercation between his mother and her boyfriend.
The 23-year-old suspect will appear in the George Magistrates’ court on Monday 23 August for his first appearance in connection with the death of the 8-year-old, Imange Jantjies and not in the Thembalethu Magistrates’ court as initially reported.
In a statement this afternoon Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Thembisile Patekile, said he is outraged by the news of the brutal murder.
The statement reads as follows:
“Preliminary investigation reveals that the couple turned up at Thembalethu Police Office last night at about 18:30 with the disturbing allegations that the suspect had killed his girlfriend’s son, later identified as the 8-year-old Imange Jantjies. Police members were immediately dispatched to the resident of the suspect, where the incident allegedly occurred.
Upon entry of the residence situated in the informal settlement in Zone 7, members made the gruesome discovery of the boy who had already succumbed to multiple injuries to the body.
Members on scene also found the alleged murder weapon, a knife, inside the residence. The knife was handed in as evidence.
The suspect was immediately placed under arrest and is currently in detention, awaiting his first appearance in the Thembalethu magistrates’ court on Monday. He faces a charge of murder.
The circumstances of this senseless murder is being investigated and all effort will be made to keep the suspect incarcerated for a very long time. Therefore the Eden Cluster Commander, Maj Gen Oswald Reddy has already instructed that bail must be opposed at all cost.
He has condemned acts of violence and gender based violence in general aimed against our most vulnerable, our women and children, in the strongest form possible. This, on the backdrop of celebrating Woman’s Month that has been designed to celebrate and affirm the pivotal role women play in society.”
