GEORGE NEWS - The George Hospital Facility Board is re-elected every three years and the new board held its very first meeting last month.

The board comprises local businessmen, community leaders, religious leaders as well as staff of the hospital. Western Cape Minister of Health, Mr Theuns Botha, said, "I want to thank the members of the facility board for their participation and involvement in the affairs of the George Hospital. The facility board plays a very important role in the wellbeing of the hospital's staff and communication with patients. I am very grateful for their hard work and commitment."

The functions of the board include:

• Approving the vision, mission and values of the facility;
• Advising the formulation of health facility policies and strategies;
• Ensuring measures are taken to improve performance and quality of service;
• Monitoring the performance, effectiveness and efficiency of the facility;
• Fostering community support;
• Fundraising for the board;
• Being involved in the appointment and evaluation of heads of facilities;
• Conducting of regular inspections of the facility.

Board Chairman, Rev Michiel Burger, said, "The board has identified the facelift of the boarding facility for mothers in the Paediatric Unit as a priority. We would like to give this area a makeover and hope to do so in conjunction with the corporate sector as well as the energetic people of George." He also emphasised the fact that members of the board, in close working relationship with the hospital CEO, Michael Vonk and his management team, hope to make a significant contribution to healthcare in the region.
