GEORGE NEWS - Police are investigating the possibility that a business robbery that took place in Thembalethu on Thursday 24 August, might be linked to similar incidents in the George area recently.
This comes after five men from Thembalethu, Thulani Maseti, Christopher Mnono, Lazola Mtini, Mfundi Rati and Mxoleleni Vumani, all between the ages of 25 and 40, were arrested after an armed business robbery at a shop in Ikhozi Street in Zone 6.
"At this stage we cannot confirm whether this incident is linked to previous incidents of a similar nature, however, the possibility is investigated," said Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies.
Police arrested the men after they received information about the robbery. When they arrived on the scene five men fled in different directions.
"All of them were however apprehended in close proximity to the premises. A search of the premises ensued which resulted in the discovery of a 7.65 Ceska, a 9mm pistol, an imitation firearm, one round of ammunition and an undisclosed amount of cash," said Spies.
The men made their first court appearances in the Thembalethu Magistrate's Court on Monday 28 August.
By the time of going to print no details about their appearance or the postponement date were available.
"Investigation into the robbery is at an advanced stage and additional charges could be added to some of the suspects," said Spies. Police could not confirm whether this incident could be linked to previous business robberies in the area.
