The winners will be crowned today and new heroes and heroines acclaimed after what has been an enjoyable and entertaining tournament.
Old Mutual, having regained their top spot in the league section, are clinging to a narrow lead and are facing a bevy of no fewer than three challenging teams just behind them.
The pack comprises Vodacom, Absa and Multistone, the latter having recorded the greatest jump up the league ladder (five pla-ces) following their 20-6 win over the Honda George last week. Sponsor Ricoh found themselves in trouble against a motivated AON team, going down 8-12 in an absorbing match and falling out of contention for the top three positions.
Eden Accounting and Niflas provided the most thrilling game of the day with a nailbiting final score of 13-13.
In the Plate section, last week's top two teams – the Rawson Rollers and the Rawson Rippers – were both beaten and have been displaced at the top by A & J Konstruksie and D C Partner.
Sanlam had the biggest win on the day, overcoming a hapless Durable Construction team 25-6 while the most exciting result of the week was the first victory gained by newcomers, the Calendar Girls, whose game has been improving with each round. Their 13-6 victory over the SPCA moved them off the bottom of the table and relegated the squad from Mazars to the wooden spoon position for the week.
This week matches promise to be do-or-die events as the participants play the final round of the George Action Bowls League. If play from the previous rounds is anything to go by, spectators are in for a treat – exciting strength versus strength match-ups, tightly fought games, much hilarity and joshing of each other and celebrations after a wonderful eight weeks of companionship, competition and social networking among the players. All will be finished with the prize giving, which is scheduled to take place as soon as all the scores have been registered and processed.
