GEORGE NEWS - Eleven gardens in Hoekwil Village are on the itinerary of the Hoekwil Open Gardens this Saturday and Sunday, 5 and 6 November, from 09:00 to 16:00.
Entry fee per person is R50 (children free), which gives you full-day access to all 11 gardens for both days.
"Put on a good pair of walking shoes and get some soul therapy. You will be absolutely blown away by the beauty which you need to see!" says Joletta Eichweber, one of the garden enthusiasts. The main sponsor of the event is Lew Geffen Sotheby's International Realty.
Tickets can be bought at the Open Garden kiosk in front of Hoekwil Post Office in Kerk Street on Saturday and Sunday. The proceeds of the day go to the Alzheimers Western Cape and The Seven Passes Initiative.
One of the organisers, Magda van Zyl, said the Hoekwil Open Gardens event has been a calendar highlight for the last decade in their community.
"Last year we received over 800 guests from all over the region, travelling from as far as Ladismith and Plettenberg Bay. It will be our ninth event this year. People should keep in mind that it takes some time to peruse these gardens - the average size of a garden is 3ha," she said.
With the Outeniqua Mountains, the lakes and ocean as backdrop, these spectacular gardens lend themselves to sweeping expanses of colourful flowerbeds, from formal to natural indigenous.
Ponds, dams and unusual water features add interest to the mass planting of roses, aloes, succulents and forest pathways. For more information, contact Van Zyl on 073 174 4186.
While strolling along Hoekwil, visitors can also support the local nurseries and restaurants.
The average size of these gardens is 3ha.
