Frik du Preez's story
Du Preez (41) was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 18 and he received treatment through the state health department. When he and his wife, Lodyn, and two sons (now 14 and 11) relocated from up-country to George in 2017, the leukemia was in remission. They were however devastated to learn from George Provincial Hospital that he had developed an even more serious health condition - he was diagnosed with acute renal failure and was told that he had to receive kidney dialysis three times a week.
They had a further shock when they learned that Du Preez does not qualify to receive the treatment through the hospital due to the combination of leukemia and renal failure.
The George Lions Club has generously paid for his dialysis treatments for the past three years. Unfortunately, their funds are now exhausted and their kind support ended in December last year. The family now face the challenge of raising financial support for Du Preez's ongoing dialysis that costs R20 000 per month.
Due to his treatments Du Preez holds only a part-time job and the family's monthly income cannot provide for this cost.
