GEORGE NEWS - Legacy Centre in Denneoord, George celebrated its first birthday on Friday 28 July and parents and guests had high praise for the wonderful team at the helm.
The centre, which caters for children with special needs, currently accommodates nine children in a safe environment where every child is met at a level he or she feels comfortable with.
The NPO Binah, which means 'understanding', is also located at the centre and creates awareness for children with special needs in order for society to better understand and accept them.
Legacy Centre is managed by hands-on mom Mariza van Deventer, who saw the urgent need in George while home-tutoring her autistic son.
During the celebrations on Friday morning, parents relaxed over a cup of tea and enjoyed lovely eats while the young ones made full use of the bicycle rides and jumping castle under the watchful eyes of the caring staff.
Ray-Yaan and Nawaal Majiet, parents of four-year-old Aqeel, are extremely impressed with the centre. "Aqeel has been at Legacy Centre since March this year and has shown encouraging growth in terms of interaction with our family and friends. We have picked up that there is a lot more eye contact than before. His interaction with kids has improved and for the first time he allows other people in his space," says Nawaal.
Parents of seven-year-old Dominique, Mike and Danielle Peacock, say their daughter has flourished since starting at Legacy Centre. "She surprises everyone with all she's learned while there - every day something new - and so happy! Legacy Centre is much more than a school, it is a support system for the children and parents."
As an added reassurance the centre features CCTV cameras allowing parents to follow their children's tutoring via an app. Legacy Centre largely relies on contributions from the public, business sector and fundraising. Donations can be made to:
