GEORGE NEWS - On behalf of the Wilderness Ratepayers and Residents Association (WRRA), Neville Ewing, chairman of the WRRA, has also expressed opposition to the development of a composting and builders' rubble disposal site by Knysna Municipality in the Wilderness Lakes area.
Responding to the article, 'Municipality to appeal against waste site' in last week's George Herald, Ewing responded as follows: "The need for the disposal of builders' rubble, recycling and garden refuse is a common problem facing most municipalities and an acceptable and workable solution needs to be found. Unfortunately, the proposed site (previously a sand quarry) for which the licence has been granted, falls within the Outeniqua Coastal Sensitive Area and also within the Wilderness Lakes Area.
"It is acknowledged that the Wilderness side of George needs a garden refuse facility to help with the illegal dumping of garden refuse and to limit the amount of green waste that goes into the various landfill sites. Ideally, this should be reprocessed into compost.
"However, the WRRA's view is that rubbish recycling and the crushing and disposal of builders' rubble in such a sensitive area warrants the strongest opposition. During 2013, the association objected to the application for this facility and we will continue our efforts to ensure that it does not go ahead as planned."
