Starting in June last year, he has already visited 14 parks and plans to visit 17 more in his quest to document his travels in an initiative appropriately called "A Year In The Wild," aimed at highlighting South Africa’s rich wildlife and scenic heritage and enhancing efforts to conserve this unique diversity for future generations.
With all his fuel sponsored by leading fuel company Total South Africa, he has already travelled around 30,000 kilometres with his most recent visits being to the Garden Route Otter trail, Gamkaberg Nature Reserve, The Karoo and Bontebok National Park. Next on his list are the parks of Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve, Camdeboo National Park and Mountain Zebra National Park.
Through social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter, he is updating his experiences on this epic journey. He is also compiling a book in association with publisher Jacana which will become something of a travel guide for people wanting to visit South Africa’s wildlife and conservation areas.
"This stretch of our country’s shoreline is very special indeed. The ocean is filled with marine life - thanks to a marine protected area which extends three nautical miles offshore. Then there are the forests - thick, beautiful, luscious green forests which line the gorges, their leaves sparkling in the sun," said Ramsay, describing the beauty of the Garden Route.
"We really do live in an ama-zing country. I am hoping that my year in the wild will help to showcase what we have and assist to highlight its value and retain it for posterity. Apart from writing about my experiences - and filming and taking photographs - I will also be focusing on the people I come across along the way."
Nineteen of the parks Ramsay is visiting are run by SANParks.
