GEORGE NEWS - Three men were sentenced to 23 years imprisonment by the George Regional Court on 1 September for raping a 20-year-old Thembalethu woman.
Xola Tofile Mashumie (23), Dwili Bulelani Buja (22) and Mgwemeshe Madoda (21) were arrested on 5 September 2015 at Luzaka Street in Thembalethu.
The police said the three approached the woman and demanded money.
The woman didn't have the money they demanded, but she gave them beer.
"They started to rape her, taking turns while they were drinking her beers. The accused were arrested after 14:00 on the same day," said Captain Dumile Gwavu, Thembalethu Police communications officer.
Gwavu said this sentence sends a message that people who commit crimes against women must be aware that they will spend a long time in jail.
Acting Station Commander Lt-Col Mteto Sapepa applauded Sgt Booysen of the Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for a job well done.
Meanwhile, popular kwaito star Sipho Ndlovu, commonly known as Brickz, was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on 17 October for the rape of his then 17-year-old niece in 2013.
Handing down his sentence, Magistrate John Baloyi mentioned a few factors that led to his decision:
- While raping her, Brickz told the victim that he would kill her should she tell his wife;
- After the rape, the victim bled from her private parts. Though she could hardly walk, Brickz told her to go take a bath;
- After taking the bath, the victim was still bleeding and confused about what the accused had done to her.
Baloyi added that as an uncle, Brickz was supposed to, among other things, treat the victim well, offer advice, surprise her with gifts, remember important dates, be there when she needed him - as this is what it takes to be a 'cool' uncle.
"In this instance, Brickz did not rise to the occasion. Instead, he raped his niece. It is an honour to be called an uncle, you have given this title a bad name," said Baloyi.
