Update
GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Garden Route District Municipality issued an update on 5 January regarding the wildfire in the Swartberg Mountains.
"The wildfire is currently in a calm state. Overnight misty conditions and the current cool temperatures, along with low cloud cover, show no rapid spread of the fire.
"Active spots are visible on the eastern flank (Division Yankee), above the valley where aerial suppression took place yesterday. These areas are considered safe, and the hope is that the fire stays west of the valley. A visible line is also seen in the middle of the wildfire, but it is within a contained area on the southern slope.
"Unfortunately, due to low cloud cover, the northwestern flank (Division Zulu) is not currently visible. In Division Charlie (Central Karoo side), no active firelines are visible.
"Minimal rain is predicted for the area today, which will assist in suppressing active areas. For safety considerations, ground crew movement up the mountain is minimal, and aerial operations are not possible due to poor visibility.
"Stakeholders in the response include GRDM, CapeNature, Working on Fire, and Oudtshoorn Municipality.
"If you spot a wildfire, please report it immediately to the GRDM Emergency Call Centre: 044 805 5071 or via WhatsApp: 081 709 5193."
