GEORGE NEWS - Environmental enthusiasts are invited to the WESSA Eden annual meeting that will take place on Saturday 11 April from 10:00 to 12:00 at the Environmental Education Centre in the Garden Route Botanical Garden.
Following the AGM formalities, local bird ringer, Andrew Marshall, will present insights from over two decades of monitoring bird populations in the garden.
Regular visitors may recognise Marshall from his work along the Mushroom Meander in the garden, where he and students from Nelson Mandela University capture, record and ring birds for research purposes.
Over the past 20 years he has observed notable changes in bird abundance and capture rates. While fluctuations in the number of birds caught cannot be linked to weather conditions, such as drought, the increase in vegetation density does seem to influence bird behaviour.
Tea and coffee will be available at a minimum donation of R20 per cup.
Attendees can sign up at the AGM to join Doug Cooke for a tour of the garden’s propagation yard (maximum 20 participants).
