GEORGE NEWS - A tip-off to the Wilderness Defence Force (WDF) led to the arrest of an alleged cable thief in Wilderness Heights at about 03:00 on Saturday 22 March.
According to the information, some stolen cables were being melted down in the Heights after they had been transported there in a white bakkie.
WDF's armed response officers and the local police searched the informal settlement and found the suspect at home. "A large number of electrical cables and tools used for cable theft were found," says WDF's Candice Rowe.
Cables that seemed to have been removed from transformers were also confiscated.
The suspect was arrested and is facing charges of possession of stolen property and damage to infrastructure.
Later last week, on Tuesday 25 March, another suspect was arrested in Fraser Street while a WDF member was patrolling the area and saw a suspicious-looking man running into a resident's property.
When he was questioned about it, he said he was looking for bread.
However, the officer recognised the man's face from an active warrant of arrest and detained him until the police came to arrest him. The suspect was taken to the police station.
The suspect was taken into custody by WDF.
