GEORGE NEWS - Marco Zampieri (34), who was arrested shortly after the 30-year-old Jacques de Buys from Hoekwil was murdered in February, appeared in the George Magistrate’s Court on Monday 7 April, when the case was postponed to Thursday 8 May.
Zampieri was earlier granted bail of R1 000. As part of his strict bail conditions, he has to reside in Johannesburg with some family.
According to De Buys’ fiancée, Kestia Breytenbach, they were at a local bar when they were approached by Zampieri. The two men had words and got into a fight, which they ‘took outside’. De Buys allegedly knocked Zampieri unconscious.
Much later, after they returned home, they noticed a car pulling into their driveway. De Buys went outside to investigate. Breytenbach alleges he was again confronted by Zampieri, who was armed with a knife.
She says by the time she went outside, the two men were already fighting. “Jacques collapsed in my arms and I dragged him onto the stoep, where I tried to stop the bleeding until the ambulance came, and we went to the hospital.”
De Buys succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead in the hospital.
While the crime scene in Hoekwil was still being processed, Zampieri surrendered himself to the police and was arrested on a charge of murder.
He is a single father of two girls, a seven-year-old and an 11-year-old girl with autism.
