GEORGE NEWS - Four suspects, Shaun Matthews (32), Leander Stanton (29), Darrel Cloete (23) and Christiaan Afrika (24), appeared in the George Magistrate's Court on Friday 30 May, in connection with the death of a man whose body was discovered in an open field in Zone 6, Thembalethu, on Thursday 27 March.
The man, whose identity had been unknown for several weeks, was eventually identified through fingerprint analysis as Samuel Salmoms (40) from Parkdene.
It is believed he had last been seen by family members earlier that week, and was himself due to appear in court on Wednesday
26 March, but never arrived. His body was discovered the following day. According to information received by George Herald, it seems the incident may be linked to the theft of fishing rods. This has not been confirmed yet, but it is alleged that the deceased had stolen these items from the suspects.
Using CCTV footage and information from community members, the police were able to trace and arrest the four suspects in connection with the killing.
During questioning, the suspects reportedly admitted to assaulting the man, but claimed they had not believed he had died, as he was still walking when they had last seen him.
Southern Cape police spokes-person Sergeant Chris Spies confirmed that the man had sustained multiple head wounds, apparently inflicted with sharp objects. Preliminary reports pointed to a mob justice incident.
The suspects were released on bail and are due to appear in court again on Friday 4 July. Police investigations are ongoing.
Anyone with further information that could assist the investigation or help trace the deceased's next of kin is urged to contact the Thembalethu Detectives Unit on 079 894 1576 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
