The venture is a new challenge for the Van der Walt couple who love cooking and previously owned a steakhouse and butchery in Delareyville near Vryburg - "The Texas of South Africa and true meat world," says Gerrit. He is passionate about his red meat and it therefore goes without saying that steak is a major item on the Texas Grill menu.
Their steak is carefully selected and matured.
Other dishes and meats are not being neglected and the restaurant offers a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu with a large variety. Excellent coffee is also promised with a full-time barista keeping coffee addicts happy.
The separate smoking area is cosy with comfy leather couches and chairs and big screen TVs for those important sport games. A cigar collection is also available and there is free WiFi.
A dedicated children's area kitted-out with toys and a jungle gym is separated from the rest of the restaurant by glass panels so that parents can watch their little ones play while enjoying their own meal without being rushed. Children are also allowed to make their own little pizzas. Child minders are on hand so parents can have peace of mind.
To ensure that patrons are well looked after, the Van der Walts have chosen the restaurant manager with care. Wimpie Stamrood was ge-neral manager of Panarottis N1 City as well as Panarottis Cape Gate - the biggest branch in the country. His whole career has been in the food industry and includes a stint of just over four years in a butchery.
In collaboration with a talented local team of artists and shopfitters, the Van der Walts's ideas for the interior décor were realised just as they had envisioned. Charming little shop fronts typical to a Western street scene demarcate seating areas.
Eugene Booysen, from Arbeidsgenot (whose products are available from Bespoke and Stables), was responsible for the shopfitting and woodwork, and artists Philip Denn and Brian van den Heever for the excellent murals and artwork. These two artists have also done murals for Kafe Serefé, Van Rensburgs Foods, Great Impressions and Mustangs, among others. CAT Signs also assisted with ideas and did the name board, menus and other printing work, including posters.
Texas Grill is open daily from 07:30-22:00. There is ample parking off Meade Street and at the back on Doneraile Square.
This area of the town centre is becoming a lively corner in the evenings with 101 Meade Street (former Coffee & More) further up in Meade Street and the Old Town House Restaurant around the corner in Market Street also
being popular places among the public.
