Long-crested eagle ends up as Oubaai roadkill

It is indeed a sad time for Herolds Bay.

One of a pair of magnificent long-crested eagles was killed recently. Hit by a car on the road towards Oubaai.

The problem is not only the loss of precious wildlife. The bigger problem facing us is the level of speeding on the Herolds Bay roads.

These roads are enjoyed by cyclists, runners and walkers. Not only that, many staff walk or cycle to work.

The question is: What is the traffic department doing about it? I would like a response from them to my letter, please, outlining their long-term plan to control the traffic in this area. Before it's too late and someone gets killed.

Green spaces are rapidly diminishing in George as the municipality rushes headlong into building a mini Pretoria. After six years of admiring these birds every time we drove in or out of our suburb, we can now only look forward to admiring the towering concrete development being thrown up around us.

Too many people have an incomprehension of beauty, and the squandering of life represents this vulgarity.

The death of this rare bird has left a hole in my heart and a fear for people and animals anywhere near these roads.
