ENTERTAINMENT NEWS - The University of the Third Age (U3A) George has an interesting programme lined up for October, with talks covering travel, technology and a look at the Emmaüs Protective Work Centre. Visitors are welcome to attend the presentations.
The programme begins on Wednesday 14 October, with an armchair travel presentation by Jackie Haupt, who will take attendees on the second part of her and her husband Neil’s journey around the Baltic Sea.
The presentation, titled 'Circumnavigating the Baltic Sea Part 2 – Klaipeda, Riga, Tallinn and Helsinki', will cover their visits to Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland.
Klaipeda, formerly Memelburg, is Lithuania’s only seaport and its principal ice-free port on the eastern Baltic coast. Riga, the capital of Latvia, is known for its Old Town, art nouveau architecture, parks and squares. Tallinn, Estonia’s capital, is one of the best-preserved medieval Hanseatic towns, while Helsinki in Finland combines traditional and modern architecture and design.
Among the highlights of Helsinki were visits to the Rock Church, built into solid rock, the Sibelius Monument, the Helsinki Museum and the Botanical Gardens.
Jackie was born in England, grew up in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), lived in Botswana for 11 years and worked at the Wits Medical School in Johannesburg. She and Neil moved to Mossel Bay in 2008. Jackie worked as an academic administrator and researcher, while Neil was an electrical project manager. Now retired, they enjoy travelling, genealogy and local history.
The presentation starts at 10:30.
Friday Talk
The Friday Talk on 16 October will focus on the Internet of Things (IoT), presented by U3A George chairman Constant Hughes-Treherne.
IoT refers to the connectivity of devices using the internet to collect and exchange data. Hughes-Treherne, who has enjoyed a varied 39-year career in information and communication technology, will explain how this technology is quietly changing the world around us.
Refreshments will be available from 10:00, with the talk starting at 10:30.
A look at Emmaüs
The General Meeting on Wednesday, 28 October, will mark the 40th anniversary of Emmaüs, which has been U3A George’s home for many years.
Ronette de Beer will present The Story of Emmaus. De Beer has been the social worker at Emmaüs for more than 30 years.
As part of the anniversary celebration, De Beer and Marysia Andrews, who has looked after the organisation’s finances for 20 years, will take attendees on a guided tour of Emmaüs, explaining its history and the various activities currently taking place in its workshops.
The event promises to be an interesting opportunity to learn more about the organisation and celebrate its 40 years of service.
All talks are held at the Emmaüs Hall in Memoriam Street unless otherwise stated.
U3A George welcomes visitors to join the programme and experience the talks and activities on offer.
