GEORGE NEWS - Runner-up in George Has Got Talent (GGT) Lynette du Plessis, born and bred in George, is a very talented professionally trained freelance dancer and budding writer of poetry and short stories that local audiences will hopefully see more of.
This former learner of Hibernia Primary and George High entered for GGT as a way to introduce herself to her home town after having performed far and wide since graduating at the Artscape Jazzart Dance Theatre in 2017.
Du Plessis was a senior company member of the Garage Dance Ensemble from 2019 to 2022. She has performed at the National Arts Festival (2014, 2018), Baxter Dance Festival (2015 to 2019) and ICA Festival (2017) in theatre pieces choreographed by acclaimed dance practitioners and collaborating with various established dancers and companies.
At the Woordtrofees 2020 and kykNET Fiëstas 2021 she was a nominee (Best Up-And-Coming Artist) for her role in the dance theatre production Krummelpap, afval en sunlightseepbaddens, a work that in 2021 toured to Afrovibes Festival in Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
She also featured in the award-winning Die Dans van my Heenkoms, The Bolero Stories dance documentary in 2020, and the revered Gat innie grond, wond in my siel dance drama film in 2021 by Garage Dance Ensemble.
Recent independent works she has performed in are Stage Fright, a short film which was showcased on DStv as part of the 2022 Woordfees TV programme, and the poetic dance drama Maanskyn en dorings at this year's Suidoosterfees, as well as the New Voices programme at the Artscape.
"I am passionate about performance arts projects that provide opportunities for expression and address injustices in society. My dancing is sacred for me," says Du Plessis.
She entered GGT as she would like to dance more in George and is seeking local exposure.
"I was not set on winning, but I saw the competition as an opportunity to introduce myself to the George people as the artist that I am now. I have grown a lot in my dance since I was at school and am a different artist now. I did not expect to make the top three. The competition was an eye-opener for me as it showed me that I am on the right path."
