GEORGE SAILING NEWS - The second series of races for the Kim Cup trophy (senior fleet) and the Island Lake trophy (junior fleet) was held on Sunday at Island Lake. Just two races could be completed in the very light breeze.
In the first race the juniors Sean Vonk (Tera Pro) and Ayden Gething (Tera Sport) built up a huge lead over the rest with Vonk finishing two minutes ahead of Gething.
Kyle Koeries won the second race, but it was Vonk who was crowned the winner of the Island Lake trophy for the 2019/2020 season with Gething a close second.
In the senior fleet the Fireball of David Laing and Anthony Alant was able to just get ahead of the rest of this fleet. Henry Paine was the leading Laser and succeeded in finishing one second behind the Fireball. Also having a comparatively good race on his Laser was Brian Musto, coming in ahead of Maurits Lammers and Bill Turner.
In the slightly better wind of the second race the Fireball established a more normal lead (four minutes) ahead of the Lasers. Bill Turner took the lead up the second beat by taking a course along the south shore, but lost this to Malcolm Osborne in the next beat.
However, Turner was able to pass again when Osborne tangled with the Dart 18 of Hans Delport, and went on to be the leading Laser in this race.
