GEORGE RUGBY NEWS - “The inaugural George Tens club rugby tournament has laid a good foundation for what we hope will become a major attraction to our city and region in future,” said George Executive Mayor Alderman Melvin Naik during the opening of the event at the weekend.
The George Municipality sponsored R150 000 towards this year’s event in which 32 teams competed. It was the first tournament of its kind to include a women’s division.

The tournament was preceded by a rugby clinic for school children in which former rugby players, coaches and administrators such as Danie Gerber, Ian Mcintosh, Dick Muir, Peter de Villiers and Bevan Fortuin shared their knowledge and skills with the younger generation.

“We thank the organisers for coming up with this great idea and hope it will grow into a significant sporting event that will benefit communities beyond sport and tourism,” said Naik.
